1 in 10 Newlywed Couples Give up Dual Income to Raise Kids

One in 10 young couples decide that one partner, usually the woman, will give up her job to raise children.

Statistics Korea said Tuesday that a study of 235,000 couples who married in 2014 showed that 49.7 percent earned dual incomes at the time, but that fell to 44.4 percent a year later.

Among those who have their first child in the first year of their marriage, the proportion of double-income couples fell from 50.8 percent in the year of marriage to 41.2 percent the year after that, meaning that one partner probably gave up his or her job.

Unfriendly Work Environment for Women Limits Dual-Income Households

The proportion of dual-income households with young children in Korea is way below the OECD average, while Korean husbands put in just half as much time helping out around the house as their OECD peers, according to a study released Monday, which suggests a link between the two.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor analyzed the employment status of couples with children aged 14 or younger in Korea and other OECD members. It found that only 29.4 percent of Korean couples in this category have two incomes, compared to the OECD average of 58.5 percent.

Low-Income Families Get More Day Care for Their Kids

The annual time limit for public childcare programs for low-income families has been increased from 480 to 600 hours a year.

The Ministry of the Gender Equality and Family on Tuesday said it secured a W1.13 billion supplementary budget for more extensive day-care services (US$1=W1,117).

The program provides accredited nannies to visit and take care of children between three months and 12 years for families with a household income below 60 percent of median income.
