Budget Carriers Boost Int'l Flights from Regional Airports

A growing number of budget carriers are starting to offer international flights from regional airports to escape intensifying competition. The move comes because the market for flights from Incheon and Gimpo international airports in the Seoul metropolitan area is saturated.

T'Way Airlines started flying from Gimhae Airport in South Gyeongsang Province to Da Nang, Vietnam and Osaka, Japan on Tuesday.

Just three years ago, budget carrier Air Busan was practically the only airline offering regular international flights from Gimhae Airport, which had long been seen as a white elephant.

More Korean airliners will carry banners promoting the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games.

The Visit Korea Committee on Monday said some 54 planes of Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Air Busan and Jeju Air are adorned with Olympic-themed banners. The campaign's aim is to encourage travelers to time their visits to Korea to coincide with the Olympics.

"We also plan to promote the event using various other materials, such as pamphlets, onboard screens and flight-reservation websites", the committee said.

When Is the Busiest Time at Airports?

More than 70 million people used Korea's 14 airports last year, according to the Korea Airports Corporation, and they were busiest on Fridays.

On all Fridays taken together, 1.17 million travelers used the country's airports. Next busiest were Sundays with 1.16 million and Saturdays with 1.15 million. The most popular departure time was 8 a.m. with 3.07 million travelers, followed by 4 p.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

The most common overseas destination was Osaka, Japan with 2.08 million travelers, followed by Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing.

Henry and Sung Hoon are killing it with their segments on MBCs I Live Alone.

On August 12, Nielsen Korea reported that the episode from the previous day had an overall viewership rating of 8.2 percent and 11.9 percent for the first and second halves of the show respectively. According to the media research company, the second half of I Live Alone has been recording double digit ratings for eight weeks in a row and broke 11 percent for the first time.
