Circle: Two Worlds Connected, Ep. 9-12: A Somewhat Prosaic Finale

Starting off, for the most part, Circles non-formulaic K-drama storytelling style worked well. The beginning and middle of the series created a feeling much akin to what I felt when I explored a dark expanse of the forest behind my house in the middle of the night as an elementary-schooler. At the time, I couldnt see where I was heading as I traversed the darkness, but the thrill of this uncertainty propelled me to keep going.

But, obviously, I didnt hope to meander around in the woods forever. At some time or another, I expected to be led out of the forest, perchance into the bright clearing from where I could see my house. This was another part of the forest expeditions appeal: I made the presumption that I had a safety net that there would be a clear and secure exit laid out for me. This made a small but substantial difference in my adventure, replacing what could have been a continuously mounting fear that Id never make it out alive, with a sense of excitement.

Circle: Two Worlds Connected, Ep. 1-4: A Puzzle Being Slowly Put Together

In the Friday and Saturday timeslots, tvN dredges into the link between a nostalgic past and a familiar present, à la Chicago Typewriter. In the realms of literature, anime, and HBO shows, sci-fi is a staple a genre whose popularity and commonplaceness could easily slot it as mainstream. And yet, sci-fi appears to be an anomaly in the K-dramaverse. In fact, Circle is (to my knowledge) the first drama thus far that can be neatly classified as science fiction. Therefore, by taking on this virtually non-existent K-drama category, the creators of this show are essentially plunging headfirst into uncharted waters, which comes with an obvious set of risks and consequently merits some praise.

In its first four installments, Circle’s perplexing narrative format and potential deliberations of intriguing themes drew an incomplete, yet riveting image. While the series still makes use of a non-linear storytelling structure, this set of episodes turn the rough sketch drawn by the previous episodes into a more coherent picture. The semblance of a standard dystopian sci-fi plot structure emerges from this illustration: the Big Bad is unmasked, the characters who were supposed to be rooting for are made clear, and disjointed plot points are mostly outlined in.

With only two episodes left of tvNs sci-fi drama Circle, the actors from the drama share their thoughts about the drama as it comes to an end.

Actor Yeo Jin Goo, who played the role of Kim Woo Jin in the 2017 storyline, said, It was an honor to be a part of a refreshingly unique drama like Circle, with its smooth storyline, unique genre of sci-fi mystery, and double track narrative. I would like to thank all the viewers who continued to send us love and support throughout the dramas run. I was happy and proud to be able to show a different side of me to viewers through the role of Kim Woo Jin.
