Korea Foundation Releases 2013 Global Hallyu Data: K-pop Wave Surges ~10 MM Fans Worldwide

Korea Foundation Releases 2013 Global Hallyu Data: K-pop Wave Surges ~10 MM Fans Worldwide

Korea Foundation Releases 2013 Global Hallyu Data: K-pop Wave Surges ~10 MM Fans Worldwide First released in media on Wednesday via the Korea Times, Korea Foundation(KF) reveals that the K-pop phenomenon continues on strong. Based on the GlobalHallyu Data 2013, the largest survey about K-pop, fans of the genre haveamounted to 9.3 MM fans all over the world. The total number of fan clubs areestimated close to 1000.

These numbers reflect nearly a 40% increase from last year's numbers whereinthere were close to 7MM fans globally, with approximately 800 fan clubs. Theincrease in 2014 is testament to the new waves of fans being brought in by thesuper 'rookies' such as EXO and B.A.P, and possibly the conversion of formerlypassive audiences to hardcore fans.

According to the Korea Times report, the Global Hallyu Data 2013, "compiledwith the cooperation of the embassies and consulates of 98 countries, surveyedthe numbers of fans and fanclubs by continents as well as related data includingthe fan club websites and country-specific analysis."

Korea Foundation President Yu Hyeon Seok claims "It is the latest and largestsurvey on the global scene. It is meaningful that the data not only provides thecurrent trend for Hallyu, but includes detailed and comprehensive information onthe phenomenon."

The data also revealed areas of the most growth in K-pop. While Asia andOceania (Australia and New Zealand) continued to dominate the distributionaccounting for 6.8MM, K-pop is growing fastest in Africa and the Middle East.Since 2012, the number of fans have increased three-fold to 60,000 and fan clubsdoubled in number from 36 to 76. Within this fastest growing region, Tunisia,Egypt, Morocco and Israel are countries of interest.

The Korea Foundation further found it interesting that, "Fan clubs mostlyfocus on K-pop. Some of them are really active enough to organize K-pop coverdance competitions on their own, But, what is noteworthy is that there aresocial clubs that study other parts of Korean culture, like food and touring."This hints at the fact that the Hallyu phenomenon is now also spilling intoother parts of Korean culture other than entertainment.

With the growth of K-pop likely continuing on to 2014, it will be interestingto see upcoming trends that will shape the size of the Hallyu wave. Will superrookies usher more fans in? What will be 2014's K-pop viral phenomenon?

JYJ Will Not Perform At Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013 Due 'Conflicts Between Management Companies' According To Event Organizers Our city has discussed with the related agency about JYJs appearance on the event, read a Twitter post from the Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013 organizers on Tuesday. The Incheon Development and Tourism Committee announced today that K-pop trio JYJ, the official ambassadors for the 2014 Incheon Asia Games, will not perform at the Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013 concert due to conflicts between management companies.

"Our city has discussed with the related agency about JYJ's appearance on the event," read a Twitter post from the Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013 organizers on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, JYJ couldn't join this time due to conflict of interest between entertainment management companies. We plan to have JYJ included in the future events hosted by the 2014 Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee and its overseas promotions."

Earlier this month, Song Young Gil, the mayor of the city of Incheon, tweeted that as much as he would like JYJ to perform, South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) has control over who performs at Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013.

"I also want JYJ to perform, but I heard from the Development and Tourism Committee that the lineup is decided by MBC, who are the producers," Song wrote on August 7.

The mayor promised to look into JYJ's exclusion from the event, which is being held at the at Incheon Munhak World Cup Stadium in Incheon, South Korea on September 1, with the Development and Tourism Committee and the Asian Games Organizing Committee.

The bill at Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013 is a virtual who's who of K-pop boy bands and girl groups, with 20 acts including 2AM, A-JAX, B.A.P, BTOB, EXO, F.T. Island, miss A, ZE:A, Girl's Day, BTS, BEAST, Boyfriend, Girls' Generation, Super Junior, SECRET, SISTAR, MBLAQ, KARA, T-ara, and TEEN TOP.

On August 6, a representative from JYJ's record label C-JeS Entertainment remained optimistic that the Tourism Committee would change their mind.

"Instead of making rash decisions, we'll be waiting for the organizing committee's final position," the C-JeS rep said.

"We have recently made a formal objection on the matter. The committee had misunderstood because the Incheon Development had told them and Tourism Committee that JYJ had rejected the offer. We straightened out misunderstandings and said that we were never even asked."

The rep pointed out the fact that the Incheon Development and Tourism Committee is planning on rolling out a major promotional campaign featuring JYJ in September.

JYJ To Possibly Be Included In Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013: Was The Whole Thing A Big Misunderstanding? When the lineup for the music festival Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013 was announced on Tuesday, there was one act whose exclusion left many fans scratching their heads: JYJ! When the lineup for the music festival Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013 was announced on Tuesday, there was one act whose exclusion left many fans scratching their heads.

K-pop trio JYJ, the official ambassadors for the 2014 Incheon Asia Games, was not on the list of performers scheduled to appear at the September 1 event, to be held at the at Incheon Munhak World Cup Stadium in the South Korean city of Incheon, according to the website allkpop.

A representative from JYJ's record label C-JeS Entertainment claims it was miscommunication that led the event organizers to think that the group had turned down the opportunity to perform at Incheon Korea Music Wave 2013.

Whatever the cause, the rep says, the band and the label execs are hoping the organizing commitee can rectify the situation.

"Instead of making rash decisions, we'll be waiting for the organizing committee's final position," the C-JeS rep said.

"We have recently made a formal objection on the matter. The committee had misunderstood because the Incheon Development had told them and Tourism Committee that JYJ had rejected the offer. We straightened out misunderstandings and said that we were never even asked. We were told we'd have a confirmed stance by tomorrow."

The rep pointed out the fact that the Incheon Development and Tourism Committee is planning on rolling out a major promotional campaign featuring JYJ next month, as a positive sign they will play ball.

"The committee wants to promote with JYJ domestically and internationally on the games that start next year, starting this September. We are going to wait and trust the committee's decision."

Meanwhile JYJ's Kim Junsu isn't letting his band's ongoing legal battles bring him down.

On Tuesday, he took his American dance team to a theme park on their day off.

"The American dance team members had nothing but praise for Junsu's way of rewarding them after a tiring weekend of concerts," a member of Kim's staff told the Korea Star Daily.

"In the gap between the Seoul concerts and the upcoming Busan concerts this weekend, Junsu decided to take the dancers to the theme fun for some fun and relaxation."

According to Jeri Slaughter, the head of Kim's American dance team, the star is always up for a good time.

"Kim Junsu's happy and infectious energy can really influence everyone," Slaughter said.

"After the concert, Junsu is probably the only singer who have suggested a game of bowling for everyone. We have really worked well together to form an even stronger energy field."
