More Than Half of Koreans Own a Car

More than 22 million cars are now registered in Korea, which means that more than half of Korean adults have a car.

As of the first half of the year there were 22.19 million cars on the roads, one for each 1.93 adults and up 1.8 percent from the end of last year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Saturday.

Imported cars accounted for eight percent, up 0.5 percentage points from late last year.

Some 15,900 of the total were electric vehicles, a 35-fold increase from five years ago thanks to government incentives.

Half of Young Koreans Who Rent Make Less Than W1 Million a Month

Some 43 percent of Koreans under 30 and 59 percent of senior citizens who live in monthly rental homes earn less than W1 million a month, according to a study (US$1=W1,129).

Both age groups spend more than one-third of their monthly income on housing. The findings were based on a report Wednesday by Song In-ho at the state-run Korea Development Institute.

According to the report, 60.5 percent of rental homes in Korea charged monthly rent rather than the traditional jeonse or deposit lease, up from 49.7 percent in 2010.

According to the Korea Customs Service (KCS), a group of Korean citizens have been arrested for smuggling 2,348 kgs (5,176 lbs) of gold in their private parts over the course of 2 years.

A total of 51 people were arrested at Incheon International Airport in early April. It's reported that the smuggling first started about two years ago in 2015.

Male smugglers hid five or six gold bars sizing 3cm x 3cm and weighing 200 grams in their rectums while the female smugglers hid the gold in their rectums or vaginas.

51 people were arrested last month at the Incheon International Airport for smuggling gold bars in their private parts.

Korea recently made it’s biggest smuggling bust after they arrested 51 people at the Incheon International Airport on the charge of smuggling gold. It is said that the men and women hid the gold in their rectums or vaginas, and were caught with as many as six gold bars. This is certainly no small matter, as the value of the gold being smuggled, was almost worth $100 million.

More Koreans Take Summer Holidays in June

A growing number of Koreans are taking their summer holidays in June rather than July or August to avoid peak-season crowds and take advantage of cheaper tickets.

Jeju Air analyzed departure data from the Korea Tourism Organization and found that the number of people heading overseas in June increased 12 percent every year from 2012 to 2016. And last June 1.78 million people went overseas, up 29 percent compared from the same month in 2015.

At Hana Tour overseas package tours were up 45 percent on-year with 238,000 customers. Jeju Air has doubled the number of flights to Fukuoka and Saipan in June, but booking rates for the two routes increased between 75 to 80 percent.
