[Song & MV Review] MONSTA X – "Newton"

On the heels of their world tour, MONSTA X have dropped their new special summer song "Newton!" The jacket shots show the boys definitely enjoying the sun.

The first thing you notice is that it's very upbeat. There's no concept album flourishes or dark sounds -- it is simply what you hear. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The boys' smooth vocals contribute to a refreshing sound. The chorus is completely uplifting. It's also a much softer sound for MONSTA X, largely abandoning their hip hop stylings and the edginess that characterized the Clan series. Also, some of their traditional EDM elements are downplayed or entirely replaced by more natural sounding instruments. And that's entirely appropriate for this summer anthem. The song itself talks about stars and attraction and how that relates to love and attraction, making me think the title "Newton" has to do with the late astronomer and physicist Isaac Newton. Which just makes it that much cooler.

[Song & MV Review] iKON - 'New Kids : Begin'

iKON has finally made their long-anticipated comeback. The title of the new single is "New Kids: Begin," which is apparently the first in a series of albums that will signal "a new beginning" and "a new style" for the boys. In addition, new stage names have been announced. Jinhwan is now "Jay," Chanwoo is "Chan," Donghyuk will go by "DK," and Yunhyeong is going by his family name, "Song." Bobby, B.I, and Ju-Ne are keeping their names. As usual, the songs are written by B.I and Bobby and composed by B.I.

[Song & MV Review] Yezi – 'Anck Su Namun'

Rapper Yezi (of FIESTAR) dropped her new single "Anck Su Namun." The title is the name of a character from the 1999 American film 'The Mummy,' as well as its sequel 'The Mummy Returns.' The character from the movie is based on Ankhesenamun, queen of the 18th dynasty of Egypt from 1348 to 1322 BC.

The song itself is drenched in pure attitude. For the most part, it's describing how bad she is, with some vague hints here and there about being the queen and such, though there's never a direct reference to Egypt or the movie, except for a part where she tries to say "Evelyn" (I think), also a character. As such, the lyrics are sort of hit and miss and a little generic.

The June 23 episode of KBS2s Music Bank had G-Dragons Untitled and Hwang Chi Yeols A Daily Song as contenders for first place. Hwang Chi Yeol won his first music show win ever with 6,380 points!

Hwang Chi Yeol was in disbelief and asked the MCs if he really won. Then he asks if hes supposed to give share some words about winning and says hes so surprised he forgot what he wanted to say. First, he individually thanked the people who created the hit song and company employees. He concludes that he was only able to win because of fans. He then thanked his Korean and Chinese fans. During his encore, he fulfills his promise and shows some breakdancing moves before bowing to his fans.

[Song Review] - BewhY's "HEWGESO"

BewhY is by all accounts a champion. In 2016, he took home the crown on rap competition "Show Me The Money," and he has used his status as a winner to launch himself into a new tier of rap artists since then. His latest release, "Hewgeso [Rest Stop]," comes off the heels of a string of singles and even international collaborations (word to Talib Kweli, Big K.R.I.T, and A$AP Mob). It's safe to say that BewhY has set high expectations for what he can accomplish with his music, and "Hewgeso" is his way of solidifying his impact.
