The SB Mixtape: 4/19/2017, Units of Measure

It was Aristotle who said The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Obviously, Aristotle didnt know anything about K-pop, but maybe he was on to something. The beauty of K-pop is it ability to adapt genres for all audiences. Differing concepts can be found to fit any preference. Whether you like the bad boys or fairy girls, you can find a group to suit your needs. And even if the group as a whole isnt your style, you can find a member whos personality speaks to you.

Thats where this mixtape comes in. Most groups tend to stick to a certain image, but luckily, they break off into sub- and special units to give fans a taste of a different sound. In some cases, the units not only bolster the original groups popularity, but become forces to reckon with in their own right. The parts, in this case, make the whole that much better, being able to bring in a whole new subset of fans. Without further ado, I present this mixtape, in honor of all the subunits and special units that elevate their groups to the next level.

The SB Mixtape: 5/4/2017, Horns

So, I dont about yall, but where I live, it snowed this week. This wouldnt be an issue if I lived somewhere where it was actually winter, but I dont. I live in the American mid-west where May is usually in the mid 70s. The two main results of this are a) I suddenly care much more about climate change, and 2) I have been forced to make my own warmth. To that end, Ive put together a playlist centered around that which gets me feeling tingly: horns.

Horns are the single greatest thing a musician can add to a mix. They elevate any production by being larger than life. Horns command attention and magnify the emotion of a song, bringing the intensity of even the greatest song up to eleven. More than that, horns are just fun; a touch of the genuine in musical landscape dominated by synthpop and minimalism. So heres a collection of songs that I hope will get you feeling as horn-y as I am.

The SB Mixtape: 5/17/2017, Would You Like Some Tea?

People are often conceived in terms of one side of two mutually exclusive halves: youre a dog person, or youre a cat person. Or youre a coffee person, or a tea person. Im a bit of an oddity: I love tea, but its not that Im not a coffee person. I like the smell of it, but rarely drink it—not because I dont like the taste, but I just dont always feel in the mood for coffee. Tea, on the other hand, I find myself reaching for no matter the place and weather (not just any time, though; being sensitive to caffeine, I once drank earl grey bubble tea at 8pm and couldnt sleep till 2am. Absurd, I know. Its just one thing on my list of useless achievements).

Slow Wine (The SB Mixtape, 5/31/2017)

One day as I was going about my business, merrily doing work and being in general an innocent child of the Lord, I was listening to my music, as Im wont to do. I have my iTunes on random, because who doesnt like when a song theyve not heard for some time suddenly seeps through their earphones? On this particular day, I was slapped in the face by Deans I Love It. This was around the time when 130 Mood: TRBL first came out, so the song was still relatively fresh to me. Out of nowhere, and I mean nowhere, my innocent, pure mind instantly whispers, This is a stripper song. And from that moment on I couldnt get the thought out of my head!
