[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" Episode 13

The events of this episode of "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" aren't surprising, but are surprisingly well-played. Determination born from despair drives Bong-soon to save her kidnapped friend, a situation common to heroes. Along the way she makes some difficult decisions, faces off with her nemesis, and struggles to reconcile all the disparate parts of her very complicated life.

Throughout the drama Bong-soon has merely lived with her powers, using them occasionally for good, but not actively pursuing justice for the wronged. It is only now with the kidnapping of her friend that her outlook truly changes. While this has been coming for quite some time, she never really committed to using her strength to help. It was more of a unkept promise. With the rescue of the kidnapped girls and her dogged pursuit of Jang-hyeon and her friend Kyeong-shim, we finally see Bong-soon actualize her potential. She will most likely take control of her destiny and go after Jang-hyeon with the help of the men in her life. I do appreciate that she, Min-hyeok, and Gook-doo are slowly becoming a team. Although I do wish that this change in Bong-soon had arrived earlier, I can't complain with how she's transforming. She's learning to open up to people, to reach out and do things about the wrongs she sees happening - it's all good.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" Episode 14

Bong-soon must get used to life without her strength, but it is more difficult than she thought. More than anything she needs the support of her loved ones, and luckily she gets exactly that. But she can't rest easy, not with an egomanical kidnapper on the lose and intent on revenge. Although this episode has deceptively adorable scenes, its heart lies with Bong-soon and her ability to become a hero.

Before she can be a hero, Bong-soon has to learn what it's like to live without her strength - it is no easy feat. Daily activities become a struggle. It is an obvious play to make her realize the importance of her gifts. Min-hyeon is, of course, her biggest source of support, accepting her without question. In a huge cop out, her mother also empathizes with her daughter, explaining that she was negligent of Bong-soon because she could take care of herself while her brother could not. But it's a poor explanation and won't hold up should Bong-soon get her powers back. She needs her mother's support always. Luckily, her father and twin brother realize that physical strength does not equate to emotional strength and are always there for her. Hopefully her mother gets a cold wake up call. The woman isn't all bad. She is the first of the family to embrace and comfort Kyeong-shim after her ordeal with the kidnapping. There may be some hope yet.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" Episode 15

The events of "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" climax in the penultimate episode, sticking the sadistic Jang-hyeon behind bars where he belongs and showing off that Bong-soon is made of greater stuffs than she first believed. Along with the positives, there were a few negatives, mainly in how the show arrived at this point. Those negatives are offset by the ridiculous cute chemistry between Bong-soon and Min-hyeok.

It is that very chemistry that has carried this show from start to finish. Each moment the main couple spends together is delightful and keeps this rather light-hearted crime rom-com from sinking. Despite my quibbles, I really have enjoyed my time with Bong-soon and her story. Let's get a few quibbles out of the way first. Firstly, why did Bong-soon allow so much time to pass before she suggested nabbing Jang-hyeon? Her pursuit of this psychopath always seemed lukewarm despite the fact that she was directly threatened and her friend was kidnapped. That lack of urgency detracted from the procedural aspect of the drama as well as from her growth as a super hero type. Focus on the romance in this case detracted from the time that could've been used to develop Bong-soon as a heroine. Proof of this is when Bong-soon, Min-hyeok, and Gook-doo finally apprehend Jang-hyeon. The scene spent most of the time following Gook-doo rather than on Bong-soon's final capture, which felt anticlimactic. While I'm glad she had a team to work with, the entire sequence felt anticlimactic.
