'Battleship Island' lands the largest premiere audience in Korean film history

Historical action film 'Battleship Island' has finally premiered, raking in a massive audience and snagging first place in the box office! Not only that, the film has set a new record in Korean film production history!

The film earned a whopping 97,000 viewers on opening day, and this is the first time a film has gathered close to 100,000 viewers on premiere night within Korea. 'Battleship Island' is a retelling of the slaves within the historical labor camps at Hashima Island in Japan. Additionally, the film earned a lot of spotlight for it's star studded cast including Song Joong Ki, So Ji Sub and Lee Jung Hyun.

August 15 marks the celebration of National Liberation Day of Korea, and actress Song Hye Kyo has once again stepped up to commemorate the holiday meaningfully by spreading awareness of Korean history throughout the globe.

This time, Song Hye Kyo and professor Seo Kyung Duk of Sungshin Women's University donated 10,000 pamphlets with the theme, 'Learning Our History from Overseas - Kyoto Version', to the city of Kyoto, Japan. The pamphlet, containing both Korean and Japanese, introduces readers to numerous Korean historical monuments located in the city of Kyoto.

Bong Joon-ho took the blame Wednesday for the screening controversy about his latest film "Okja" and expressed hope that the spat between producer Netflix and Korean cinema chains can be resolved amicably.

"I am responsible for all this fuss. I had just thought it would be great to provide viewers with more channels and opportunities to watch my film, but it seems I wanted too much", Bong told reporters at a press conference in Seoul.
